The Buckle Boutique blings out a Love Notes card box

For Valentine's Day, why say "I love you" with a simple card, when a set of love cards in a gorgeous box can be hers?

I made this Card Box for Love Notes, covering one of Close To My Heart's Journaling Cards Box with CTMH's Yuletide Carol paper.  Yuletide?  Yes, right -- I think the roses on the pretty ruby paper is much better suited to Valentine's Day. Lovely, aren't they?

Topping off the hinged opening is a strip of fancy Gold Rectangle Dazzling Diamond self-adhesive sticker sheets from The Buckle Boutique. I simply trimmed the row using standard scissors, peeled off the sticker back, and adhered it to the box. The scissors cut through the resin very easily, for when I needed to trim them on a slant for the box sides.

Now, while I intend to write a love note for my sweetie (hubby John) to put inside of the box for Valentine's Day (shhhh, don't tell), I also made a set of four cards that could be used within the box if that's more your style.

Let's take a look at these romantic cards. All are size A2 (4.25" wide x 5.5" high) to fit perfectly in the Journaling Card Box:

For this card, I used a CTMH Colonial White card base and topped it with a layer of CTMH Ruby cardstock, and then a layer of tan damask print paper from the Yuletide Carol paper pack.  I tied a pretty beige grosgrain ribbon around the height of the card (securing under the Yuletide Carol layer). Before tying the bow, I cut an intricate die cut called "Celtic Heart" from Cheery Lynn Designs; I topped the bow with a romantic mulberry-paper red rose from Wild Orchid Crafts.

Love is definitely in the air with this pretty, detailed Valentine.
Starting with a card base from CTMH White Daisy cardstock, I embossed/cut the beautiful pattern and heart opening using a die from Sizzix.  The word "love" was cut from a piece of CTMH Slate cardstock, using a word pattern available from the Silhouette Online Store, and my Silhouette Cameo. The pretty leaf flourish was also cut using the Cameo and an SOS file, from CTMH Topiary cardstock, and topped with a mulberry-paper red rose from WOC.

Again, for this card, I started with a CTMH White Daisy cardstock base, and topped the card with a piece of CTMH Ruby cardstock that I embossed using a ProvoCraft Cuttlebug hearts folder, and my Cheery Lynn Designs "Crossover" embossing machine.  For the stamped roses, I used a CTMH floral stamp and the rock-n-roll technique to apply ink to the image before stamping.  The "I Love You Because" stamp is also from CTMH, using CTMH Exclusive Ink in Black.  The leaves were cut using a file from the Silhouette Online Store, and CTMH Topiary cardstock.

Finally, for this simple card, I topped a CTMH White Daisy card base with a piece of Yuletide Carol paper that I had trimmed into a pennant shape.  I then cut the word "Love" using a Silhouette Online Store word pattern; I cut it twice -- once in CTMH Slate, and the other in CTMH White Daisy, for a unique effect.  The adhesive epoxy hearts are also from CTMH.

Puffy Rhinestone Heart makes this card Special!

Happy Valentine's Day, friends!

I have a very pretty bling heart to share with you today, direct from The Buckle Boutique. This pretty puffy heart holds up nicely on a card like this and it can be reused by the recipient on a belt, hair bow or even ... (check this out) ...

Flip flops!  ---->

The paper I used for this simple card is from Kathy Davis Studios. It is their Ambrosia line that I've used for Christmas and now Valentine's Day. I love the muted seafoam green with the red, don't you?

Valentine's Day 2013

Happy Valentine's Day!

I'll let you in on the inside joke between me and my hubby John: yes, we call each other "monkey," which is why "CardMonkey" came very naturally to me.

While I'm the sweet one who makes cards and plays with paper, John makes up adorable stories about Flying Monkeys. For instance, at Christmas, he insisted that it's Flying Monkeys who pull Santa's sleigh, not reindeer.

So I couldn't resist making him this Flying Monkey Valentine's Day card, complete with an ascot:

Cut: Silhouette America Online store (monkey, angel wings)
Accessories (scarf): Rumple Ribbon by Lovebug Creations
Paper from stash
Gel pen by Amy Chomas; Adhesive by 3M ATG

Do you have sweet traditions with your loved ones, or pet names for each other?  The best thing about making cards is being able to customize them for those we love.

Happy ♥ Valentine's ♥ Day, Monkey Butt.

A Few of My Favorite Things...

Today, I'm showing a few of my favorite things: a Card Kitchen card (February kit from Jillibean Soup); 3D roses handmade using Rumple Ribbon (by Lovebug Creations); and, a stickpin that I created using simple jewelry findings.

The card kit design showed the papers as I have placed them, as well as the "You are my Favorite" sticker. However, I decided to change it up by making the complementing roses -- they're simply rolled and glued, with a pearl center. I added adhesive pearls and Punch Bunch punched leaves beneath. To make the stickpin, I used a pearl corsage pin and added three glass beads and a crimp bead. Easy-peasy, and I think it truly enhances the card. What do you think?

This is my daughter Emily's Valentine's Day card. Of course she's my FAVORITE daughter -- she's my only child! :)  Thank you for being the bestest daughter, as well as my best friend, Emily!

Love,
MomE

Valentine's heart crocheted embellishment

Have you ever tried something just completely different with your craft supply to see where it would take you?

That's what I did recently with some Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon -- I created a 3-D embellishment with the ribbon itself.

To make this sweet heart, I "crocheted" a chain of single stitches using the ribbon as my "yarn."  I tied it off in a bow, then laid down a line of white glue in a heart shape, onto a black piece of cardstock.

I fussy-cut an arrow that I threaded into the heart, and glued the shape onto the card. I then filled the center of the heart with CTMH Liquid Glass.  I finished the card by adhering the black card onto a CTMH Colonial White card, added faux stitching in white gel pen, and added four CTMH glitter gems.

January "Card Kitchen" Valentine's Cards

Hi Bloggy Friends!

I hope you're having a good Monday.  Here, it's a bit dreary -- but at least there is no snow in the forecast. Have I told you how much I detest winter??

One redeeming feature of winter is Valentine's Day, a time to remember loved ones. Some might refer to it as a "Hallmark Holiday" ... one just designed to sell cards.  For me, it's a time to make 'em and send 'em!  Last week, I showed you one of The Card Kitchen aqua-and-pink Valentine's Day cards I made from the kit.  Today, here are three more (and stop back tomorrow for the final four).

Do you like the color combination, or are you more of a traditionalist?

One of the things I like about The Card Kitchen kits by Jillibean Soup is that they will incorporate other companies' cardstock and/or embellishments that go with their own -- expanding possibilities and ideas. This month's kit has paper and goodies from Bo Bunny as well as from Jillibean Soup.

Stop back tomorrow to see four more cards made from this kit ... and also, stop back on Saturday when I'll show a Valentine's treat box I made from the scraps from the kit!

Here's a little sneak peek at the box:

'Til tomorrow ....

Pink and Aqua in a Valentine's Day Card

I've been neglecting my cardmaking, and my blogging about it, while I've been buried in STUFF in the Paper Jungle.  I'm working on a major renovation / reorganization up here, and it has started with purging the furniture that is in the way.

A reveal will happen soon enough.

But for now -- and because it was easy to find the components --  I pulled out January's Card Kitchen card kit from Jillibean Soup, and made two of the cards. Here's my take on one ...

I change the kit design just enough to make the card my own.  For example, I added the rosette and the "LOVE" cut-out, and used a different blue paper for the far left pennant.  I also add Glossy Accents to the cuts and hearts, and rushed into this picture so you can see them drip (!!!) here.  Time for a little repair, and back to the clean-up of the Paper Jungle.

Wish me luck!

Playing with my food: Exploring Cricut Cake

Welcome to the "FEEL THE LOVE" Blog Hop (Saturday, February 5) hosted by Jaime at Glitter, Stamps and Paper Oh My.  Jaime issued a challenge -- it's not just cards we're looking for this Valentine's Day, but other gifts "from the heart."   So if the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, what better time to take out my Cricut Cake for its introductory spin?!

That's right, Mr. Smiley (my DH John) bought me a Cricut Cake for my birthday last August, and it took until the dead of winter for me to take it out of its box.  So many toys, so little time!

So what to make? How about some heart-shaped cookies? I purchased some storemade sugar cookie dough and rolled it out to 1/4" thick, as instructed with the Cricut Cake ...
Here's a little suggestion: Roll your dough out right onto the cutting board. I only have one Cricut Cake mat and they're not widely available and they're expensive. I found this alternative in my grocery store ... Cut 'n Slice Flexible Cutting Boards by Norpro.  Three came in a pack for $7.99. They were approx. 10"x14" so I just trimmed off 2" to make it fit under the rollers like the standard 12" mat.  These are food safe and ready to use, and worked great -- did not cut through or peel/chip or anything.

After rolling out your dough, I suggest chilling it to make it easier to cut (reducing drag). Slip the whole sheet in the freezer for about 10 minutes ... and cut!
Slow to medium on your speed, and medium to medium high (4'ish) on your pressure ...  I cut the hearts out in a variety of sizes to see which I liked best. The cookies cut cleanly ~ 1" min. as well as larger.  Smaller than 1" had increased drag resulting in an uneven cut of the dough.

To remove the cookies from the mat, I popped the CUT sheet into the freezer again to firm for about 10 minutes. (This is why you'd like more than one mat, to keep your production line going.)

I laid the cookies out on a parchment-covered cookie sheet to bake.

You can cut much more intricate shapes than just simple hearts.  Here is a sweet image with a knock-out of the word LOVE.  I made this cookie fairly large -- about 4" I believe, so the text would hold together as its own cookie. That cookie is shown at the top of this post.

The nice thing about cutting cookies with the Cricut Cake instead of cookie cutters is the variety of sizes you can control ... and the uniformity of the cuts.

The OTHER nice thing about using dough instead of paper to cut with your Cricut is that you can re-roll your scraps and voila!  Another fresh sheet to cut!  Sure saves on having that drawer full of scrap paper, ehhh?
Now ... on to more adventures with Cricut Cake.  First thing first ... prepare the mat. To get your foods to stick (remember, these mats have no glue .. they're food safe!), use a pastry brush to spread a thin clear layer of Crisco onto your Cricut Cake mat.

Next, I tried pasta sheets.  These skidded on the mat unless I sprayed them with water first.  I think it would be better if I used fresh pasta....

Again, I cut heart shapes out of the lasagna sheets, thinking that I'll make individual layered luscious lasagnas for my honey for Valentine's Day ...

Mostly, it cut very cleanly. However, every once in a while, the sheet shifted so there was a rough or uncut edge to the pasta. Kitchen scissors to the rescue! Again, these are food-safe and clean. Make sure yours are too, if you cut food with your scissors.

I'm on a roll now ... turkey roll, to be precise!  Let's see how deli meat is tackled by Cricut Cake.  The meat stayed firmly to the shortening and was pretty easy to cut. It might be easier to freeze it to add firmness. I also tried cutting salami, but that was WAY too soft and was a cutting disaster ... even clogged my blade. So stick to firmer meats.

Hard cheese was also very easy to cut. In this case, I used sliced deli provolone from a pre-cut package. I cut these hearts at 1". The little hole in the bottom center cut was a natural part of the cheese, unrelated to the cutting process.   I could use both the cut hearts, as well as the off-cuts for a sandwich or a pretty topping for a meat pie?

Can you imagine how much fun you could have making hors d'oeuvres for a special party?  Use card symbols (heart, diamond, spade and club) for a bridge party ... a stork and baby symbols for a baby shower?

Whether on a cracker or toast or on top of a pizza, your deli cuts using your Cricut Cake expand the world where your creativity can have tons of fun!

Of course, you can always use your Cricut Cake to use it conventionally -- that is, to cut fondant or gum paste to make cake, cookie or cupcake decorations.  Here, I used pink fondant and cut heart shapes for Valentine's Day.  I then used food-dye color markers to decorate the fondant with a handpainted flower and dots.  I plan to put this atop of some Royal Icing on the cookies.

As much fun as I had exploring the different things to cut, here is my recommendation: If you're only interested in cutting a standard shape for which you have or can get a cookie cutter, use a cookie cutter, not your Cricut Cake.  It is much faster especially when cutting cookies or deli meat.

But if you want to have fun playing with your food (despite what your mother told you about starving children in Third World nations), Cricut Cake opens a whole new universe.

And remember, DO NOT use your standard Cricut or a modified Cricut to cut any food product. That will void your warranty.

The Cricut Cake has been specially made with food-safe and washable features. For example, the blade housing is fully enclosed (no place for germies to enter) so when it gets gunked-up with salami you can wash and disinfect it. There is a piece of silicone over the keyboard, and a rubber housing to surround your cartridge, so no food products (flour, shortening) get stuck in the electronics. Yowzer, you could REALLY mess up a regular Cricut by cutting food. DON'T DO IT!!

If you're really desperate to use/try Cricut Cake for a week or so, e-mail me privately. I'm willing to loan mine out if you pay shipping from/and back to my home.  Just one of those nice things I'll do for my followers ...

And one more thing: JUST THINK of all of the possibilities beyond food that you can cut if you can roll the medium out to about 1/4" thick.  For example, somewhere down the road I'm going to try polymer clay and ceramic slip. I can then use polymer clay to make Christmas ornaments that dry on their own, or take my slip to my favorite ceramics shop for firing to make tile designs or accents to ceramic pieces I make like vases.  Can you imagine how pretty some of the scroll-work or flower designs would be on the sides of vases??!

Alright, blog hoppers ... time to head back into the world of paper crafting...

BUT WAIT!  Before you go, I have BLOG CANDY to reward you for slogging through this long post!!  Here's what I have -- REAL CANDY!  OK, and some paper stuff too.  I've been making Valentine's Day candy and I will send you some CHOCOLATE for you to eat, or to pass along to your honey.  I'll also include some things to make your Valentine's sweeter.  HOW TO WIN:  Be or become a follower here, AND leave a comment.  Mr. Smiley will choose a number randomly to pick the winner.
